Woman Who Chooses Joy.

There are people who are naturally positive. And then there are people who have lived enough life to understand exactly what joy costs and choose it anyway. Holly Christenson is the latter.

She loves hard. She works hard. She plays hard. She wears her heart on her sleeve, believes feelings are meant to be felt, and has very little interest in taking life or the people she loves for granted.

Her reason is deeply personal.

Holly has experienced tremendous loss throughout her life. Those experiences could have shaped her in many different ways. Holly made a conscious decision:

“I choose joy, life, love, and happiness.”

And once you understand that about her, so much of the rest of Holly’s story makes sense.

The Accidental Banker.

Holly Christenson is the SVP-Director of Retail Banking with Luminate Bank and has spent more than 29 years in banking, or as we like to call it around here, title adjacent.

But banking was definitely not part of some carefully mapped career plan. Holly graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, was newly married and had one fairly immediate need: A job.

Enter her mother-in-law. She happened to be a vice president at an insurance company and had a friend who was a vice president at a bank. One phone call later, Holly landed an entry level position in the bank’s call center, giving balances, making transfers, helping customers balance checking accounts, and learning the business from the ground up.

Holly still refers to herself as an “accidental banker.”

But apparently, the accident worked out pretty well.

From that call center, she went on to work across nearly every area of banking, including consumer, commercial, deposits, lending, small business, treasury management, and even a little social media and marketing along the way.

Today, she has found a particular passion for customer service, business development, networking, and making sure clients have products and services that actually fit what they need, because banking is much more than just a transaction.

One of her favorite niches is working with nonprofit organizations. That part isn't accidental at all. Holly describes herself as having a servant heart, both personally and professionally, and service has become an important thread throughout her career.

There Is Plenty of Business for Everyone.

Holly has spent much of her career in commercial lending, an area she describes as both highly competitive and traditionally male dominated. Years ago, another colleague turned friend said something to her that changed the way she looked at competition: “There is plenty of business for everyone.”

Simple?

Yes.

But Holly took it to heart.

Instead of treating every other professional as a threat, she began seeing what could happen when people opened doors to relationships rather than immediately putting up walls. It is a philosophy that fits naturally with who Holly is.

She doesn't believe another woman’s success takes anything away from hers. She would much rather see women support one another than spend their energy competing with each other. She believes in "straightening each others crowns" as they say.

And in a world that can feel increasingly divided, Holly thinks we could all use a little more kindness.

The Woman Who Launched Her Career.

That spirit of support started close to home. The same mother-in-law who made the phone call that landed Holly her first banking job became one of the most important mentors of her career.

Throughout the years, Holly talked through challenges, opportunities, and potential career changes with her. That guidance helped Holly navigate nearly three decades in banking, steadily building experience, relationships, and friendships along the way.

If Holly could sit beside her younger self on that very first day in banking now, she knows exactly what she would tell her: “Find the most experienced, respected female leader in the bank and learn everything you can from her.”

That advice feels especially fitting coming from a woman whose own career started because another woman made a phone call on her behalf.

Sometimes mentorship is a formal program.

Sometimes it's simply someone who knows you well enough to say, have you thought about this? 

Growing Older Is a Gift.

Holly’s “why” isn't really about banking. It's about life. 

“Every day is a gift, and growing old is a gift not given to everyone.”

Holly learned that truth much earlier than most. Her sister was stillborn at full term. When Holly was four years old, her two-year-old brother passed away from an inoperable brain tumor. She describes herself as having been born a middle child, briefly living as the oldest, and ultimately growing up as an only child.

Loss was part of her story before she was old enough to fully understand it. Then, as an adult, Holly experienced another unimaginable loss when her first husband died suddenly from a massive heart attack at only 43, leaving Holly to continue raising their two children.

She could have allowed sadness to become the defining feature of her life.

She made a different choice. Holly decided she would feel everything, because she believes emotions shouldn't be avoided.

If you're sad, feel sad.

If you're angry, feel angry.

Work through it.

Just don't build your home there. 

“The important part is to not get stuck in that space, but to move forward.”

Her experiences changed the way Holly sees everything. She says losing her husband ultimately made her see life “more brilliantly” than she ever had before. That might be one of the most beautiful descriptions of resilience I've heard.

Not forgetting what happened.

Not pretending it didn't hurt.

Seeing life more brilliantly because you understand how precious it actually is. A gift only given to those who survive walking through the fire. 🔥

Life Is Good.

Today, Holly's life is full.

Five years ago, she was fortunate to find love again and married her husband, Matt. Together, they have created what Holly calls their “big, beautiful, blended family” with four children: Tristan, Astrid, Owen, and Ethan.

Her village stretches far beyond immediate family. It includes an enormous tribe of family and friends, including her very first friend, whom she met in preschool at four years old.

Yes, they're still friends. And somehow that tells you a lot about Holly too.

When Holly isn't working, you may find her at the family cabin, camping, hiking, or hitting the open road with Matt in their Airstream travel trailer. Their favorite kind of trip involves finding a new trail and exploring somewhere beautiful.

And if Holly gets to choose the destination? Yellowstone.

Her favorite place on earth.

She also walks almost every day with her Standard Poodle, regardless of what Minnesota weather decides to throw at them.

For Holly, nature and fresh air aren't just exercise.

They calm her soul.

Wait. You Were in a Janet Jackson Video?

And then Holly casually dropped this little piece of information into her spotlight questionnaire. Her first concert was Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation Tour.

Cool enough.

But apparently Holly is also briefly in the “Black Cat” video. Excuse me, Holly?

You can't just slide that into a questionnaire like it's normal information. 😂

Her favorite artist today is Tom Petty, but the Janet Jackson video appearance definitely earns permanent Her. Spotlight bragging rights.

Bring Down the Temperature.

Holly’s warmth doesn't mean she avoids difficult conversations. Her strategy is actually very practical. When someone comes in frustrated or aggressive, she lets them vent. Listen first.

Often, Holly says, the frustration isn't actually about you. You're simply the person standing there when it comes out. Once someone feels heard, the real conversation can begin.

“There is always a ‘why.’ You just need to find it.”

Rather than matching someone's intensity, Holly tries to bring the temperature down and find a place where both sides can work toward a solution. It's customer service, emotional intelligence, and nearly three decades of working with people rolled into one.

Just Be Holly.

After 29 years in banking, Holly has earned professional credentials, including her Certified Commercial Loan Officer accreditation through the Independent Community Bankers of America. She's worked across nearly every part of banking. She's built relationships, served clients, developed business, and created a career she never actually intended to have.

But the philosophy guiding her today isn't complicated... “Just be Holly.”

She reminds herself that she doesn't need to impress everyone.

She doesn't need to become someone else to fit the room... “I am enough.”

And maybe the roots of that confidence go all the way back to her first banking job.

Remember that call center? Employees weren't required to dress professionally because customers couldn't see them. Holly showed up in dresses and suits anyway. One day, her boss finally asked why. Holly told her: “I felt more professional on the phone if I looked professional.” She always believed you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Her boss smiled and said: “Holly, you are going to go somewhere in life.”

Holly never forgot it. Nearly three decades later, she certainly did accomplish a lot professionally. But what stands out about Holly isn't simply where her career took her.

It's how she chose to live along the way.

She has known profound loss and still loves without abandon.

She has worked in competitive environments and still believes there is enough business for everyone.

She has built a successful career and still says, “I don't live to work. I work to live.”

She believes in philanthropy. Community. Loyalty. Feeling your feelings. Getting outside. Loving your people. Helping women instead of competing with them. And remembering that another year of life is something worth celebrating.

Maybe that's what “Just Be Holly” really means.

Know what matters to you.

Live accordingly.

And don't waste too much time pretending to be anything else.

Holly, thank you for reminding us that strength doesn't always need to be loud. Sometimes it looks like allowing yourself to feel the hard things without letting them define everything that comes next.

Sometimes it looks like choosing joy again.

And again.

And again.
