Few embody these qualities as profoundly as Laura Dishman, co-manager of Grand River Abstract & Title Co., whose journey is a testament to the power of legacy, leadership, and love for community.

A Legacy Born into the Title Industry

Laura Dishman’s story is deeply intertwined with the history of Grand River Abstract & Title Co. — and with her family. “I was literally born into the title industry,” Laura shares. Her parents purchased the company two years before her birth, laying the foundation for a thriving business in Jay, Oklahoma. Over the past 56 years, the family-run enterprise has expanded from a small office to four locations with approximately 30 employees. Today, Laura and her mother co-manage the operation, continuing her late father’s legacy. “My father passed away in 2008, but his legacy of leadership and love for the community lives on through my mother, my siblings, and myself, Laura reflects. This legacy fuels her dedication to the company and her team.

Grand River Abstract & Title Co. serves Delaware and Ottawa counties in Oklahoma’s picturesque northeastern corner. The region includes Grand Lake, one of the largest lakes in the state and a vital economic hub. This scenic area is more than just a workplace for Laura; it’s home.

Leading with Expertise and Passion

With over 30 years of experience, Laura has held various roles within the company. She found her niche in the closing department early on, thriving in the final stages of helping buyers and sellers achieve their goals. “I also enjoyed working on commercial closings and supporting business owners in finalizing their operations,” Laura says. Today, she manages four offices, leading with a teammate-first philosophy while fostering a supportive environment for her employees.

Inspired by Women Leaders

Laura credits her mother and grandmother as her greatest inspirations. “Both were incredible leaders who excelled in raising families, leading employees, and giving back to the community,” she says. Their example taught her the values of integrity, hard work, and resilience.

Like many women in business, Laura acknowledges the need to work harder to gain respect. “Women can embody femininity and strength simultaneously, but often must prove it,” she notes. Her advice to younger women? Seek mentors and role models, embrace your unique talents, and find career opportunities aligned with your gifts.

Staying Driven and Grounded

What keeps Laura motivated? A deep passion for the title industry and her innate ability to nurture and support others. “The reward lies in the opportunity to serve,” she says. Whether guiding a stressed employee or helping a buyer navigate the closing process, Laura finds fulfillment in in all these areas of lifting up others and helping in the whole process that is title insurance.

Laura draws strength from stories of resilience. Inspired by figures like Amy Purdy, she’s learned the importance of overcoming adversity — a skill critical in an industry facing market fluctuations and legislative challenges. Her favorite mantra, “To whom much is given, much is required,” reflects her commitment to giving back.

Outside of work, Laura’s colleagues might be surprised to learn about her passion for design. From creating beautiful spaces in her home to remodeling office lobbies, these projects fuel her creativity and bring balance to her life.

Laura’s ultimate goal is to be remembered as a leader who embodied integrity and passion. “I truly love my employees and my community,” she says. For her, success lies in caring for others and leading with character.

Laura’s advice for navigating workplace challenges? Understand the fears that drive others and work toward building stronger relationships. “Stay organized, prioritize projects, and remain focused on your own value and self-worth.  Never allow someone’s opinion define you,” she advises.
