Leading with Purpose, Empowering with Passion
Some leaders build careers.
Others build people.
For more than three decades, Valerie Jahn Grandin has done both. As Chief Underwriting Counsel for Alliant National Title Insurance Company, she has earned a reputation not only for her legal expertise and underwriting excellence, but for her unwavering commitment to developing those around her.
Whether mentoring her team, supporting agents across the country, or championing women in leadership, Valerie believes the greatest measure of success isn't what you accomplish yourself but by how many others succeed because of your influence.
That mindset has guided her throughout a remarkable 33-year career in title insurance.
Today, from her home in Orlando, Florida—though she'll happily remind you she's a proud Miami girl at heart (Go Canes!)—she continues to lead with optimism, authenticity, and a belief that relationships will always be the industry's greatest asset.
Ironically, her journey into title may have started long before she ever realized it. As a young girl, she often sat beneath her father's desk while he flipped through abstracts with his well-worn Bates stamp, fascinated by work she couldn't yet understand. Looking back now, it's clear that title wasn't simply a career she chose, but it was part of the foundation that shaped the leader she would become.
Title Was Always in Her DNA
While many title professionals describe "falling into" the business, Valerie smiles knowing her path was almost predetermined.

Watching her father practice real estate law planted seeds she didn't even realize were growing. Those early memories eventually evolved into a career that has spanned more than three decades, allowing her to combine legal expertise with one of her greatest passions of helping people succeed.
Today, she says her greatest joy isn't simply solving underwriting issues. It's leading talented professionals who, together, provide agents with the highest level of underwriting support possible.
That commitment to serving others has become the cornerstone of her leadership.
Leadership Begins with Why
Ask Valerie what drives her, and she'll quickly recommend Simon Sinek's Start With Why.
In fact, it's required reading for her team. She believes every leader should understand the purpose behind their work before focusing on the tasks themselves. When people lead with purpose instead of process, trust naturally follows. Stronger relationships are built. Better decisions are made. Loyalty grows.
And in title insurance, relationships have always been the foundation of lasting success.
She encourages her team to continually revisit their "why," knowing it may evolve throughout different seasons of life and career.
The Quiet Power of Confidence
One of Valerie's earliest mentors, Pat Jones, left a lasting impression. Although the two had very different personalities, Pat demonstrated something Valerie has never forgotten: Quiet confidence.
She watched Pat confidently navigate a workplace where women still had to prove themselves in ways their male counterparts often didn't. Rather than becoming louder, Pat became steadier. That lesson stayed with Valerie throughout her own career.
Today she reminds women that confidence doesn't always need to make noise.
Consistency often speaks louder.

Advocating for Yourself Matters
Like many women, Valerie has experienced moments where others received recognition for ideas, work, and expertise she had quietly provided behind the scenes. Rather than becoming discouraged, she learned an important lesson. Be your own advocate.
Not through confrontation or ego, but through consistency, professionalism, and confidence in your value. Interestingly, she discovered something encouraging over time.
When she left organizations, customers and colleagues often recognized she had been one of the driving forces behind much of their success all along.
Authentic leadership has a way of revealing itself.
Your Network Is Your Greatest Investment
Throughout Valerie's career, one lesson has proven itself time and again: the relationships you build will often open more doors than any resume ever could. Her advice to women entering the title industry is both practical and powerful: "Build your network now and keep adding blocks to it throughout your career. Vendors, colleagues, mentors, customers, and peers are invaluable resources who genuinely care about your success. Sure, we can find answers in AI, but you'll never find champions there."
For Valerie, networking has never been about collecting business cards. It's about cultivating authentic relationships built on trust, generosity, and mutual support.

Technology will continue to change the way we work, but it will never replace the encouragement of a mentor, the wisdom of a trusted colleague, or the advocate who speaks your name when you're not in the room.
Because careers aren't built alone.
They're built together.
Great Leaders Build Other Leaders
One of Valerie's philosophies is refreshingly simple. The best leaders are never threatened by talented people. Instead, they intentionally develop them.
She believes recognizing the strengths of others instead of competing against them creates stronger teams, healthier workplaces, and future leaders who will eventually help lift you as well.
Leadership isn't about being the smartest person in the room.
It's about making everyone around you better.
Positivity Is a Leadership Skill
Known affectionately as the "Energizer Bunny," Valerie intentionally chooses optimism.
She points to growing research supporting the power of positive thinking and cautions against allowing negativity to spiral into catastrophizing, perfectionism, blame, or discouragement.
Her focus remains fixed on solutions. Not problems. That mindset has helped her lead through decades of industry change while inspiring those around her to do the same.

The People Who Keep You Grounded
Behind every successful leader is a circle of people who remind them who they are beyond the title.
For Valerie, that circle begins with her daughters, their husbands, and her beloved granddaughter, Frankie Rose, who brings immeasurable joy to her life. It also includes a treasured group of lifelong friends she affectionately calls "The Chicas." Together since high school, they've celebrated milestones, weathered challenges, and shared enough laughter to last a lifetime.
Valerie believes those enduring relationships are one of life's greatest gifts.
"Nurture the friendships of those who truly know you. They are a constant fountain of encouragement, love, and belly laughs."
No matter how successful your career becomes, she says, never lose touch with the people who loved you before the promotions, the accomplishments, and the titles. They're often the ones who keep you grounded, cheer you on without conditions, and remind you what truly matters.
A Creative Soul
Many colleagues know Valerie loves theater, dance, and art. What they may not know is just how much she enjoys pushing creative boundaries. "The weirder, the better," she laughs.
Whether in art or business, she believes challenging conventional thinking often leads to innovation. Just because something has always been done one way doesn't mean it should continue that way.
Strong Leaders Take Care of Themselves and Get Things Done
For much of her career, Valerie poured everything she had into her work before realizing that great leadership begins with taking care of yourself. It wasn't until later in life that she discovered the transformational benefits of intense exercise. What started as a fitness journey quickly became something much bigger. It was a way to clear her mind, manage stress, and approach challenges with greater patience and perspective.
That same clarity shapes the way she leads.
Valerie has learned that success isn't about chasing perfection. It's about keeping your eyes fixed on the solution, bringing people together, and moving meaningful work forward.
As she puts it:
"We're all being asked to do more at a faster pace. Stay focused on the critical issue, meet the needs of your stakeholders, and get the solution across the finish line. Perfection delivered three months late rarely creates additional value."
For Valerie, leadership isn't measured by flawless execution. It's measured by consistent progress, thoughtful decisions, and delivering results that make a difference.
Building a Legacy of Opportunity

Although Valerie has spent more than three decades shaping the underwriting profession, the legacy she hopes to leave reaches far beyond legal opinions and underwriting decisions. She wants to help create an industry where women no longer have to fight quite so hard for a seat at the executive table.
Growing up in title and watching the industry evolve, she's proud of the progress that's been made, and believes there's still more work ahead. "We have made significant inroads, but in an industry dominated by women, we should have far more women serving in senior executive leadership. We cannot become comfortable until those opportunities truly reflect the talent within our industry."
Her hope is that every woman who rises continues to reach back and lift another.
Because leadership isn't simply about advancing your own career.
Her Final Words
If Valerie could leave every woman in the Her. Collective community with one final message, it would be this:
Celebrate the qualities that make you uniquely you!
Don't lose your individuality trying to fit someone else's mold.
Corporate professionalism and authenticity can absolutely coexist.
In fact, your uniqueness may be your greatest strength.
As Valerie says with a smile…
“Always add your own flavor. Mine is just plain spicy.” 🌶️

Thank you, Valerie, for sharing your remarkable journey, your hard-earned wisdom, and your heart with the Her. TitleCollective community.
Your leadership reminds us that true success isn't measured solely by titles or accomplishments, but by the lives we influence, the relationships we build, and the doors we open for others.
